Small Business Awards Selection Criteria


Minimum Qualifications:

To qualify for a Northeast Kentucky Small Business Award, nominees must meet the following criteria:
  • Nominee/business must be located in Boyd, Carter, or Greenup county in Kentucky
  • Classified as a "small business" in terms of sales, number of employees, etc... according to the SBA's Size Standards by Industry Sector
  • Nominees must be organized as a for-profit company and operated as a legally-formed sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, LLC, LLP, PSC, etc…

The Northeast Kentucky Small Business Awards recognizes small business success. To measure "success", nominees will be scored based on the following achievement indicators::

• Staying Power - history as an established business



• Evidence of Growth or Expansion - demonstrates an intent and capacity to grow



• Creating Jobs – evidence of potential for future hiring

• Increase in Sales – evidence of potential revenue growth – financial strength



• Innovativeness of Product or Service

• Response to Adversity & Creative Methods to Remain Competitive

• Involvement & Support Within the Community - evidence of owner and/or employee contributions to enhance community (use of personal time and resources, volunteering, etc…)


Small Business Champion - Awards Selection Criteria

A person who is nominated as a Small Business Champion should have demonstrated the use of his/her professional expertise to advocate, assist, and/or support small businesses. These individuals will have also taken an active role in creating opportunities either directly or indirectly supporting effective operations of small businesses in their community.

Nominees may include bankers, attorneys, CPAs, politicians, economic development officials, small business lobbyist, and other individuals who advocate on behalf of the small business community and/or whose professional and volunteerism directly impacts the local/regional small business community.


Young Entrepreneur of the Year

A person nominated as Young Entrepreneur of the Year has owned/operated a successful small business for 2 or more years and is under the age of 40 (as of May 15). Nominees should demonstrate reason and motivation for starting a small business, evidence of growth or expansion, response to adversity, evidence of contributions to assist and/or mentor other young and aspiring entrepreneurs and other small business owners, awards and achievements, and community involvement..
